Teaching children about the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle is currently at the top of the national agenda. It is there because obesity levels in children and adults are at record proportions and our health service is struggling to cope with an ever-increasing demand. Research shows that a healthy mind and a healthy body, prevents illness, improves life expectancy and supports a child’s progression and attainment at school.
This year at Belvoirdale we have achieved our Leicestershire Healthy Schools award and by October, we hope to achieve our Silver Games Award because of the amount of sporting competitions that the children have taken part in over the year. We have increased the number of after school clubs, employed a psychotherapist to support those children with emotional needs and worked hard to include parents in all aspects of the children’s learning. Over the summer holiday, I am pleased to confirm that our kitchens will be refitted so that we will be able to cook our own school meals onsite for the first time in many years! All of these things are designed to help and improve our children’s physical and mental happiness and wellbeing.
With this in mind, we will be holding a HEALTHY FORTNIGHT from Monday 12th June to Friday 23rd June at school.
Where possible, all of the children’s learning will be linked to physical and mental wellbeing. This may include children learning about how the heart works, using government health statistics in maths, cooking healthy food, discussing what makes us happy and sad, the dangers of drugs and alcohol and many more subjects linked to health.
Throughout the two weeks, there will be many activities going on in school, some of which you are welcome to attend. A timetable is on the back of this letter. These activities include a Zumba workshop, a theatre show, a sugar assembly, sports mornings, den making afternoon and a visit from the Leicestershire Life Bus which discusses the human body/mind and ways to remain fit and healthy. The fortnight culminates in a HEALTHY LIVING FAIR on Friday 23rd June form 3pm to 4.30pm in which children and teachers will run stalls and games for you to come and enjoy free of charge!
The only financial contribution which we are asking for our Healthy Fortnight is £2 to cover the cost of the Life Bus visit to the school and a donation of £1 for Den Making Day which will be given to Save the Children. Payment for the Life Bus should be made by using the return slip below as soon as possible and the £1 donation for Den Making Day is voluntary via your child’s class teacher on Friday 16th June.
Finally, you will find attached a FOOD DIARY. Please encourage your child to fill this in each day starting on Monday 5th June and return it to school on Monday 12th June. The information will be used to support classroom learning.
